Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club

Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club is located in the village of Hersden, four miles east of Canterbury. This village of 300 houses was designed and built around the 1920s by the Chislet Colliery Company to house the miners who worked at Chislet Colliery. The colliery was located on the south side of the A28, Margate to Canterbury Road and was operational between its commencement in 1914 and the final shift on 26th July 1969.

The club was formed in 1936 after the Coal Board provided land on the west side of the village, close to the Miners Welfare Club. The Club has continued to use, and care for, this green continuously since then.

The present Clubhouse, positioned on the north side of the green, provides a pleasant area from which to view the games as well as facilities for changing rooms, catering and a small licensed bar for members and their guests.

Improvements made this past winter have seen an enlarged re-fitted kitchen and additional facilities as well as alterations to the ladies changing room that provides modern facilities as well as improved access and egress via a front door from the green.

Summer Season Ends - Winter commences!
Our Summer Season has now concluded with a loss against Ashford Rail and a rather poor position in the Catherine Wheeler Day at Ramsgate. Never mind. Our Winter Programme commences with Indoor Bowling at the Welfare Hall every Monday and Thursday at 7pm. Subs remain at £2 for the full evening but you may also get caught by Les Hards on Thursdays who does the Clubroom raffle! There is a programme of events at Cliftonville Indoor Bowls Club involving our members and any of our bowlers who haven't tried it yet are welcome to attend.
At the AGM in October, there will be Player Availability Forms for names to be entered for the Indoor representative matches.
