Bowls Club
Welcome to the
Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club

Our club is situated by the recreation ground, The Avenue, Hersden, and has been a part of the village amenities since 1938.

Chislet Bowls Club offers a warm welcome to bowlers of all abilities and we invite you to enjoy our informative web site and to visit our ground to experience this healthy and enjoyable sport for all ages.

The present Clubhouse, positioned on the north side of the green, provides a pleasant area from which to view the games as well as facilities for changing rooms, catering and a small licensed bar for members and their guests.

Bowls truly is "a sport for all" it can be played by all ages, abilities and sexes making it the perfect sport for all members of your family to enjoy together. Like all sports, the object of bowls is essentially simple, but to be able to play consistently well demands determination, concentration and practice.

No upper or lower age limits but children must be accompanied by an adult. Bad back? Stiff knees? Can't bend? Wheelchair user? No Problem. We have equipment and aids to help. We also have OPEN DAYS and FUN DAYS to which everyone is welcome (Please see EVENTS)

Just come along on a Tuesday afternoon at 2.00p.m. during the season. Please wear flat shoes.

You can then select one of many movies that may help you to bowl better. The New Zealand and Australian tutorials are easy to understand and informative.

Please browse our site to see fixture dates and results of matches played and a lot more.

The history of our club, together with information about the sport of bowls can be found in the ABOUT section.

Our Bowls Club maintains a long-standing relationship with the village of Hersden, from whom the original founders of the club came from during the time that the miners of Chislet Colliery were given the land by the Coal Board just before the last war. As well as the annual match between the village and the Bowls Club, we are invited to participate in the village quiz each year, where we always hope to make up at least one table in the Welfare Hall to play against the other village organisations to raise money.

Since 2013, the annual matches between Village and Club have now raised over £1778, even though no matches were able to start in 2020 and 2021 because of covid restrictions.

The Last Shift
I just wanted to thank everyone who helped make Sunday such a great success. I have to give a special thanks to Ian and Denise as the event was well organised and the food was excellent but without the many helpers it would not have been possible. For me it was quite heart-warming to see the club pulling together to make it all happen. My thanks to all the volunteers - the bar, the kitchen, the teas, the breakfast chef, the raffle and all those who worked on the garden.
My only slight disappointment is that we didn't bring the trophy home although we did come a very creditable runner up.
Thank you all
