Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club is located in the village of Hersden, four miles east of Canterbury. This village of 300 houses was designed and built around the 1920s by the Chislet Colliery Company to house the miners who worked at Chislet Colliery. The colliery was located on the south side of the A28, Margate to Canterbury Road and was operational between its commencement in 1914 and the final shift on 26th July 1969.

The club was formed in 1936 after the Coal Board provided land on the west side of the village, close to the Miners Welfare Club. The Club has continued to use, and care for, this green continuously since then.

The present Clubhouse, positioned on the north side of the green, provides a pleasant area from which to view the games as well as facilities for changing rooms, catering and a small licensed bar for members and their guests.

Improvements made recently have seen an enlarged re-fitted kitchen and additional facilities as well as alterations to the ladies changing room that provides modern facilities as well as improved access and egress via a front door from the green.

Throughout the summer season, the club hosts a full programme of matches and competitions against other clubs and within its membership. We also host Charity Bowls Events, including fund-raising for Kent Air Ambulance and Kent Search & Rescue.

This year, 2018, The Chislet Open Bowls Event will be held on Sunday 24th June with a top cash prize plus cash prizes for runners-up.

Qualified coaching, led by our fully accredited coach and chairman, Michael Blackband, can be made available for new members, who are always welcome to come along to practice sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon.

Beyond the outdoor season, the club supports indoor matches against other local clubs and there are annual indoor matches arranged with other East Kent miners clubs. We also commence our own indoor social bowling activity at the Chislet Colliery Welfare Club Hall on Monday and Thursday evenings commencing this year in early October. Play is on our portable carpet rink and membership of the Welfare Club is not essential unless the full facilities of the Club Bar are required. New bowlers are welcome to come along at 7pm to try out the game of indoor bowls.

The Ladies AGM will be held at the Clubhouse on a date to be notified.

Chislet Bowling members also take advantage of the facilities offered at the Cliftonville Indoor Bowls Club where Jim organises three afternoon sessions and we also play Arena Bowls Club three times as well. Those events will appear on our FIXTURES page when all is confirmed.
