Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club

Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club is located in the village of Hersden, four miles east of Canterbury. This village of 300 houses was designed and built around the 1920s by the Chislet Colliery Company to house the miners who worked at Chislet Colliery. The colliery was located on the south side of the A28, Margate to Canterbury Road and was operational between its commencement in 1914 and the final shift on 26th July 1969.

The club was formed in 1936 after the Coal Board provided land on the west side of the village, close to the Miners Welfare Club. The Club has continued to use, and care for, this green continuously since then.

The present Clubhouse, positioned on the north side of the green, provides a pleasant area from which to view the games as well as facilities for changing rooms, catering and a small licensed bar for members and their guests.

Improvements made this past winter have seen an enlarged re-fitted kitchen and additional facilities as well as alterations to the ladies changing room that provides modern facilities as well as improved access and egress via a front door from the green.

Throughout the summer season, the club hosts a full programme of matches and competitions against other clubs and within its membership. We also host Charity Bowls Events, including fund-raising for Kent Air Ambulance and Kent Search & Rescue.

Beyond the outdoor season, the club supports indoor matches against other local clubs and there are annual indoor matches arranged with other East Kent miners clubs. We also commence our own indoor social bowling activity at the Chislet Colliery Welfare Club Hall on Monday and Thursday evenings commencing this year on 2nd October Play is on our portable carpet rink and membership of the Welfare Club is not essential unless the full facilities of the Club Bar are required. Our Annual General Meeting was held last Sunday, 10.30am, at our clubhouse where over 50 members attended. Our Ladies' captain, Sue Clarke, presented the meeting with a first view of our new Sportswear tops, which are mainly white with gold and navy blue panels and showing the Club badge. It was unanimously agreed to take these tops into use when bowling representative matches from the start of 2018, but members can continue to wear their alternative "white tops" for our club-only events. Members also received updates on the intended work necessary to improve the state of the greens ditches. All nominated officers were elected en-bloc and the meeting ended at 11.45a.m/
