I am sorry to inform everyone that Charles Trevette died 21st February 2021. His funeral will be 24th March at 12:00 at Barham Cemetery. Any donations please to either Pilgrims Hospice or Demelza

On Friday evening 19/02/21 John Griffiths sadly passed away at the Hospice. Funeral will be 22nd March, Link to service will be posted here when available.

We lost one of our newest members Tony James to Covid at midnight Tuesday 19th January 2021. He will be missed by those of us who came to know him during last summer, and I am sure with the way he was playing he would have been a great asset to the club.

Bowls - A Sport For All Ages

Bowls truly is "a sport for all" it can be played by all ages, abilities and sexes making it the perfect sport for all members of your family to enjoy together. Like all sports, the object of bowls is essentially simple, but to be able to play consistently well demands determination, concentration and practice. Free Training Sessions Available, No upper or lower age limits but children must be accompanied by an adult. Just come along on a Tuesday afternoon at 2.00p.m. during the season. Please wear flat shoes.

Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club is located in the village of Hersden, four miles east of Canterbury. This village of 300 houses was designed and built around the 1920's by the Chislet Colliery Company to house the miners who worked at Chislet Colliery. The colliery was located on the south side of the A28, Margate to Canterbury Road and was operational between its commencement in 1914 and the final shift on 26th July 1969.

The club was formed in 1936 after the Coal Board provided land on the west side of the village, close to the Miners Welfare Club. The Club has continued to use, and care for, this green continuously since then. For an active Google Map of our location, please go to our CONTACT page.

The present Clubhouse, positioned on the north side of the green, provides a pleasant area from which to view the games as well as facilities for changing rooms, catering and a small licensed bar for members and their guests.

Improvements made recently have seen an enlarged re-fitted kitchen and additional facilities as well as alterations to the ladies changing room that provides modern facilities as well as improved access and egress via a front door from the green.

Throughout the summer season, the club hosts a full programme of matches and competitions against other clubs and within its membership. We also host Charity Bowls Events, including fund-raising for the Air Ambulance and the Alzheimers Society.

Qualified coaching, led by our fully accredited coach, Michael Blackband, can be made available for new members, who are always welcome to come along to practice sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon.

Beyond the outdoor season, the club supports indoor matches against other local clubs and there are annual indoor matches arranged with other East Kent miners clubs. We also commence our own indoor social bowling activity at the Chislet Colliery Welfare Club Hall on Monday evenings commencing this year on 20th September. Play is on our portable carpet rink and membership of the Welfare Club is not essential unless the full facilities of the Club Bar are required. New bowlers are welcome to come along at 7pm to try out the game of indoor bowls.

During our 'closed' season, Chislet Bowling members also take advantage of the facilities offered at the Cliftonville Indoor Bowls Club. Dates of arranged games will be shown on the EVENTS page. We also play Arena Bowls Club at Cliftonville for a Trophy over three games as well.
Chislet Bowls Club members also play in the East Kent Short Mat League, with 2 teams, known as "Chislet Labradors" who are currently in Second Division and "Chislet Cheetahs" in Third Division. Matches are played on Tuesday evenings for Labradors and Thursday evenings for Cheetahs from September through to March from 7p.m. Practice is on the same days when no home match is booked.
