Chislet Colliery Welfare Association
Bowls Club
Chislet Colliery Welfare Association Bowls Club is located in the village of Hersden, four miles east of Canterbury. This village of 300 houses was designed and built around the 1920s by the Chislet Colliery Company to house the miners who worked at Chislet Colliery. The colliery was located on the south side of the A28, Margate to Canterbury Road and was operational between its commencement in 1914 and the final shift on 26th July 1969.

The club was formed in 1936 after the Coal Board provided land on the west side of the village, close to the Miners Welfare Club. The Club has continued to use, and care for, this green continuously since then. The present Clubhouse, positioned on the north side of the green, provides a pleasant area from which to view the games as well as facilities for changing rooms, catering and a small licensed bar for members and their guests.

Throughout the summer season, the club hosts a full programme of matches and competitions against other clubs and within its membership. Qualified coaching can be made available for new members, who are always welcome to come along to practice sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon.

Chislet Bowls Club members also play in the East Kent Short Mat League, where they are presently 4th in Division 3 of that competition. Matches are played on Friday evenings from September through to March with home matches played at Herne Village Hall. We are known by the name, "Chislet Cavaliers". The results table and other information can be found at .

Chislet in the EKBA Competition
This Thursday (14th September) Chislet CWABC were represented in the East Kent Bowling Club match against Beckenham & Bromley Bowling Association at Forest Hill Bowls Club. Our rink (Tony Kirkbank, Dave Coupland, Mal Harris and Jim Harlow as skip) were the only winners for the EKBA, scoring 24 - 15 against their opponents. The shield was retained by BBBA by only 1 point.
15th September 2017
On Wednesday 9th August, we hosted the visit of Geoff Chapman, 2017 President of KCBA and his County team to play us in a friendly 6 Rinks match.

Play got underway on time, despite an awful forecast of heavy rain and the match was completed without interruption. We remained well placed in 2nd place throughout, with the match was enjoyed by all. The ladies, once again, provided an excellent repast at the conclusion and Geoff presented Tony Kirkbank with the County Pennant and our gallant helpers each received a token of thanks. A cheque was passed to the club and due thanks were accepted.

We look forward to their future visits to our club.

Following the passing of Brian, we have been told that the funeral will be held this Friday 5th August at 3pm at Thanet Crematorium. No Black, please.
1st August 2017
July saw a less crowded schedule of matches but we still fared rather worse than we would have liked. Overall, we won two matches but lost six, mostly in the Catherine Wheeler events. A couple of matches were cancelled and we played more in-house tournaments. Our green is playing a lot better than at the start of the season but variations in the running remain a point in issue.A new Green Committee is about to form to assist Jim in his work.
The Hospice Day was adversely affected by the non-appearance of some visiting teams who had originally intended to come, but Chislet rose above that disappointment to record 1st and 2nd places. A substantial sum was raised to benefit the Hospice.
1st August 2017
Our annual charity match in support of the Pilgrims Hospice took place on Sunday 30th July with 18 teams arriving to play, including several from Chislet. The honours were taken by the triple headed by Jack Cramp, aided by Pat Rogers and Mick Tomassi. Runners-up were the triple, skipped by Tony Kirkbank and aided by Diane Kirkbank and Peter Hume. Photographs will be uploaded soon.
1st August 2017
The funeral of Don Rouse, our past president from 2000 until 2004, who passed away last week, will take place at Margate Crematorium on Wednesday 2nd August at 11.30am. Afterwards, at The Heron PH in Herne Bay.

The bowls match scheduled between PROBUS (of which Don was an esteemed member) and Chislet for this date will now take place at 4pm at Chislet Bowls Club, to allow time for members to attend at the funeral and wake.

Our president, Elsie, has spoken with Don's wife, Sheila, and she is in full agreement with the arrangements shown.

A period of reflection will be held before the match and a collection for Cancer Research will be taken.

Boughton Open Day
We sent two triples to the Boughton Open Day on 2nd July where, in hot sunshine, 26 teams competed over 4 games each of 8 ends throughout a long day. Mal Harris' triple with Tony and Diane Kirkbank took a creditable 3rd place overall with 3 wins (including a bonus point) and a tight loss. Birchington took the honours - again.

June Report
Rather more mixed results than May, but our schedule was rather more trying. Catherine Wheeler results have been disappointing but a great win against Whitstable at home was a surprise to both teams!
Our first Chislet Open was successful and a new cup was donated by President Elsie Edwards and presented by Nuala O'Donaghue of Co-Op Funeral Care, who kindly sponsored this event for the first time.
Our green is finally improving following work on the equipment but we do seek more speed from the surface.
3rd July 2017
Clean sweep for Chislet in the Air Ambulance Open
Our annual event in favour of the Kent & Sussex Air Ambulance was played throughout the day on Sunday 4th June. Twenty triples were entered with the winners being Derek and Jean Trussell playing with Jim Bellingham. They received the new shield, presented by Perry's Vauxhall Dealers of Westbere. Runners up were the triple skipped by Del Walker with Tony Kirkbank's triple third.

The winter Arena series
This winter season has seen us have three matches against Arena, played at Cliftonville Indoor Bowls Club. Following our success on the 10th March, we took the series by 2 matches to one. Paul Green, the Arena captain, announced before that final match, that we would be bowling for a trophy in remembrance of Howard Phillips who recently passed away.
